    How Can Google Help You?

Posted by fcpltech on April 24, 2009

Google is much more than simply searching the internet now.  Google Docs allows you to create documents similar to those found in Microsoft Office.  You can create a word processing document, a presentation, a spreadsheet, or forms and have access to them anywhere you can get online.  You can also share them with other people if you’re working in a group and you can even work on the same document at the same time with others.

By using Google Calendar, you can keep up with activities that you have scheduled and you can even embed them into a blog or website if you wish, to share them with others.

With Google Groups, you can create a group space where you can collaborate on a project.  For example, the Frankfort Library is working on Clinton County Reads for 2009 and we have a committee made up of multiple representatives from around the county.  To help the committee work together, we have created a Google group space where we can post what each of us is working on and others from the committee can post comments.  They can also upload documents, email everyone at the same time from the group, and much more.  If you need to collaborate with others and you aren’t all in the same place, this is a great way to work together.

To get started visit http://docs.google.com an sign up for an account.

    More Useful Online Tools

Posted by fcpltech on April 14, 2009

Need to take a document or file with you but you keep forgetting your jump drive?  Try using http://drop.io/ which allows you to create a custom web address with your file name to upload.  Each file can be up to 100 MB and can be password protected.  Files stay saved for a 1 year period.  With this you can collaborate in real time with others on the same file.

You can also use http://www.senduit.com/ which allows up to upload a file and gives you a unique web address for the file.  senduit gives you the option of keeping the file uploaded online for a period of 30 minutes up to 1 week before it is deleted.  This is great to use if you need to have something uploaded quickly for a presentation or to have quick access to at another location.

Need to stay in touch with your family, a group of friends, or some of you from work simply want to create an interactive forum?  Try creating a Ning at http://www.ning.com/.  A Ning is a social networking site that YOU create.  You simply create a name and web location for your Ning and then you ask others to join your Ning or they can find you and join.  You can create a Ning for your church, your family, friends, co-workers, etc to get messages, pictures and more to a specified group of people.  In your business you can use it for customers to stay informed of upcoming events, new need-to-know messages and so on!

New Technology Soon Available @ FCPL

Posted by fcpltech on April 4, 2009

The Frankfort Community/Clinton County Contractual Public Library recently received a Library Services Technology Act grant through the Indiana State Library.  The grant will allow the library to integrate new applications and programs through our website and our online catalog (PAC).

    For our PAC (Online Catalog)
We will soon be adding Spanish PAC, which is the Spanish language version of our online catalog.  We will also be having some short training sessions and will have online resources available to help with using Spanish PAC.  Check out the Louisville Free Public Library to get a preview of Spanish PAC.

Also added to our online catalog will be enriched features through ChiliFresh that will give the user a more “Amazon” type experience.  Users can rate an item by giving them stars and can write a review of the item that will appear in our online catalog.  Check out a search from the Louisville Free Public Library that demonstrates this capability through the online catalog.

    Through our Website
Another feature that we will be implementing through our web page is our Online Book Clubs through DearReader.com.  Patrons will sign up for the book club of their choice and a portion of brand new books will be sent through your email everyday.  You will be able to link to our online catalog so you can place a hold on the item and will be given the chance to discuss the materials in an online book discussion forum.

We will also be offering enhanced content using BookLetters throughout our website with pages geared towards your favorite genre, book covers displaying the newest books to hit the shelves, newsletters you can sign up for to stay current, best seller lists, awards lists, and much, much more!  You will be able to search options easier and faster via our website.

Stay tuned for more information and visit our website for more updates!  http://fcpl.accs.net

    Make your Life Easier!

Posted by fcpltech on April 4, 2009

If you want to make your life easier, try some of these resources that are available online and free to the public.

The Frankfort Community Public Library has a delicious bookmark site now, http://delicious.com/frankfortlibrary.  Find tons of resources, no matter what you’re searching for.

Tired of not having the file in the right format when you need it.  Try http://www.zamzar.com and you can convert image, movie, sound, word processing files & more!  You simply upload the file and then put it an email address where the file can be emailed to you.  Then you can open it up and begin working on it wherever you are.

If you’re looking for a site that allows members of a group to work on a document at the same time while online, visit http://www.zoho.com.  So, if you’re working as a group at school, or a professional needing to collaborate in different locations, ZOHO gives you the opportunity to create a document and alter it while online with other group members.   Programs included within ZOHO are spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, wikis, and more.

Chunk It! (http://www.tigerlogic.com/ChunkIt/ )is also a great tool to use while doing research.  You download Chunk It! and it runs within your web browser simultaneously with your favorite search engine.  Basically, 2 panes appear with the searches in them.  Chunk It!’s search will actually give more in depth details on the site and the links within the site to save you some clicks to find out if it’s a creditable source.
